Torrens Parade Ground

Join us for a 1.5 km walk on November 6 at the Torrens Parade Ground to remember our fallen or injured heroes and ensure Legacy Families in SA & BH left behind do not suffer after the loss of a loved one who served our country.

Walk, whilst building comradery with your workmates, social groups, family, friends, school buddies or take the opportunity to walk alone in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Challenge yourself to raise vital funds for Legacy, raise $100 to go in a draw to win a collection of the Legacy Bears.

With the year that it has been, first with the Bushfires and now with COVID, our Legacy Families need our help now more than ever.  The isolation, the restrictions, the loss of property and all their belongings, the loss of jobs, and the economic loss has brought back so many suppressed memories which our Legacy widows need our help to cope with, please dig deep, ask your friends and family to help you reach your goal – show our Legacy families they have not been forgotten!

Post the walk you can enjoy our Legacy BBQ brekky, cooked by our long term Legacy Partners, Babcock Group and place a poppy for our heroes who lost their life or their health for our freedom.

This will be a COVID safe environment with a strict COVID plan in place. We will work with SA Health and SAPOL to ensure we deliver our event whilst adhering to the rules. More information regarding the Walk will be sent to all registrants.

Entry:

Concession: $20

REMEMBRANCE WALK FOR SCHOOLS

Remembrance Walk for Schools

Your school can help Legacy families, by participating in this year’s Remembrance Walk.

Legacy’s Remembrance Walk will give students a chance to reflect, a chance to learn and an opportunity to raise much needed funds for Legacy, one of Australia’s oldest and most respected charities. Legacy’s Remembrance Walk is an event designed to help the community understand what Legacy does, who Legacy helps, and to remember what our Australian Defence Force personnel have sacrificed, and what their families go through, particularly the children.

HOW CAN YOUR SCHOOL GET INVOLVED?

Fundraising Ideas

Register to walk at your school, get everyone involved; raise funds and walk with your school mates on Monday 11th November, finishing at 11.00am with a minutes silence.

  • Free for schools to register, however a gold coin donation would be appreciated
  • Register your school for Legacy’s Remembrance Walk or you can email us and we can register you
  • If you can’t walk on Remembrance Day (11.11.19) choose a suitable day that suits
  • We ask schools to include the minute silence as part of their walk/fundraiser
  • Encourage students to do a project; research their ties to those who served in the ADF and/or have had a family member, grandparents, parents, aunties, uncles, cousins cared for by Legacy.
  • The Australian War Memorial has quite a few suggestions for class projects, please click here to view
  • Get everyone involved; students, teachers, administrative staff and the school community
  • You may also choose to fundraise in the lead up or on the day by having a
    • casual clothes day
    • sausage sizzle
    • or a cake stall

WHY SHOULD YOU GET INVOLVED?

The benefits for getting involved are many; but here are just a few good reasons:

  1. Education and social awareness for the students; helping students remember our Veteran forefathers, those who lost their life or gave their health in service and defence of our country and their families.
  2. An opportunity to have a speaker from Legacy come to your school to talk to the students about our Defence Force and the history of Legacy, Legacy’s programs, services and support.
  3. Community Social Responsibility, having your school support Legacy’s Remembrance Walk can generate some great news stories for your school newsletter and local paper.
  4. Mate-ship; students, teachers and the extended school community to walk together to raise awareness and funds for Legacy one of Australia’s oldest charities.
  5. Schools will receive a certificate of appreciation, as well as a template certificate to give to each of the participating students.

2019 Impact

The 2019 we saw Legacy SA & BH hit a huge milestone with 90 years of serving families of our Australian Defence Force veterans. For 90 years Legacy has been keeping the promise of one digger to his dying mate “to look after the missus and the kids”.  Symbolic to the milestone the inaugural event saw Charlotte, our little 4 year old who lost her father in tragic circumstances at only 2 years of age, and Mrs Phyllis Schmidt our 94 year old widow commence the walk by untying the Legacy ribbon.

Impact:

The money spent played a big part in the 2019 service provisions of items as follows:

  • 73 holidays provided at Legacy’s holiday cottages
  • 82 Utility Grants proved
  • 45 Bus trips
  • 60 Education Grants
  • 86 appointments facilitated for Legal and Financial counselling

Why Support Legacy

Legacy’s Remembrance Walk brings an opportunity to pay tribute and remember the sacrifices made by our once serving members of the Australian Defence Force, our heroes and their families.

Just like our Legacy family, with our youngest only 5 years old to our oldest who turned 108 years old; the demographics of participants in 2019 was diverse. Ranging from city commuters, families, current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force, Government departments, schools, clubs, corporate businesses and many defence-related enterprises that provide goods and services directly to Defence, and deliver into the supply chains of prime contractors in South Australia, the defence state.

On Friday 6 November 2020, we ask you to take an hour from your morning to be a part of our unique Remembrance Walk. Starting at the Torrens Parade Ground, meet at 7:00 am for a 7:30 am start with a minute’s silence, then follow the Australian Light Horse Brigade mounted troops for a walk of 1.5 km's up King William Street, around Government House, along North Terrace, turning at Kintore Avenue to walk along the ANZAC Centenary Memorial Walk path and finishing back at the Parade Grounds with a Legacy BBQ breakfast and opportunity to say "thank you".

Fundraising Tips

Go the extra mile to raise vital funds to help us increase our services.  Your fundraising will go a long way to assist us, as little as $5 will play a huge part in lives of our Legacy Families, in particular the families who lost so much during the bushfires or with the impact of COVID.

We have plenty of tips to help you along the way. For each $100 you raise, you will be entered into a drawer to win a suite of Legacy Bears.

Within our fundraising tips is an opportunity to engage in Legacy's Memorial Walk which can be done any day and any time.  A little bit of history, a bit of team building, and camaraderie.
